Dry skin, also called xerosis, is a common problem. Dry skin is most common on your face, hands, arms and legs.  It is more common during the winter months, when humidity is low. Some people also have a genetic, or hereditary, tendency to develop dry skin. More serious dry skin conditions, such as the inherited group of disorders called ichthyosis, can sometimes be disfiguring enough to cause psychological distress. Environmental factors such as exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps. Dry skin is a nearly universal problem, but certain factors make you more likely to develop tightness, flakiness and fine lines. Apply cool compresses to itchy areas, and try over-the-counter cortisone creams or lotions if your skin is inflamed. Avoid the use of tap water when cleansing dry skin. Use mineral water to freshen your face. Don’t use a washcloth-a rough texture can irritate. Use as little soap as possible. Limit its use to face, armpits, and genitals if you can. Do not over-indulge in sunbathing. Excessive exposure to sun rays can cause dry skin, wrinkles and skin cancer. Avoid coming in contact with highly alkaline soaps and detergents like washing sodas and powders which contain highly alkaline and drying ingredients. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Use a humidifier in your home during the central heating season.  Moistening with water, then applying a thin film of air-excluding moisturizer, restores the suppleness of the dry skin.
